Building a sustainable world with coastal clean-up and mangrove planting

APRIL 15, 2024

On March 21, 2024, students from Philippine Transmarine Carriers (PTC) Sea Mariners at Tanza National High School (TzNHS), Ismael Mathay Senior High School (IMSHS), and Baliwag Maritime Academy (BMA) joined forces with PTCitizenship volunteers for a commendable initiative—a coastal cleanup and mangrove planting event at Tanza Marine Tree Park in Navotas.

Under the watchful guidance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Sea Mariners and the PTC Group members learned the significance of waste segregation, emphasizing responsible waste disposal. Together, they diligently gathered a remarkable 620 kilograms of coastal waste, underscoring their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Meanwhile, students from Baliwag Maritime Academy took charge of the mangrove planting endeavor. With precision and care, they successfully planted 46 Avicennia officinalis mangrove seedlings, contributing to the preservation of coastal ecosystems.

These activities align seamlessly with the thematic learning of the Sea Mariners program focus of January and February, centered on "Appreciating Nature" and "Volunteerism." By actively engaging in hands-on conservation efforts, the participants not only enriched their understanding of environmental issues but also demonstrated their dedication to community service.

The collaborative efforts of Sea Mariners students and dedicated PTC volunteers exemplify the power of collective action in fostering environmental sustainability and nurturing a sense of responsibility towards our natural heritage. Through initiatives like these, the Tanza Marine Tree Park continues to serve as a beacon of environmental advocacy and community engagement.
