PTC Senior Vice President for Cruise Operations Katherine “Karen” Avelino joined maritime industry leaders and government representatives during the stakeholder validation of the feasibility study for the proposed National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) Regional Training Center (RTC) in Tanza, Cavite, reinforcing PTC’s commitment to advancing the future of maritime education and workforce development.
Organized by the NMP in partnership with the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), the consultation gathered representatives from government agencies, maritime training institutions, shipping companies, and industry organizations to review the proposed establishment of the ₱2-billion training facility. Once approved, the regional center aims to bring government-subsidized maritime training closer to seafarers in Luzon while strengthening the country’s maritime education and research capabilities.
Representing the Philippine Association of Maritime Training Centers, Inc. (PAMTCI), Avelino emphasized the importance of ensuring that the proposed facility addresses emerging industry needs rather than duplicating existing basic training programs.
She highlighted the opportunity for the NMP to focus on closing critical competency gaps by investing in specialized training for emerging technologies that will shape the future of global shipping. By developing programs in areas where local training remains limited, the proposed center can help equip Filipino seafarers with the skills needed to remain globally competitive while supporting the industry’s long-term growth.
The recommendation echoed the broader consensus among stakeholders, who encouraged the NMP to position the regional training center as a hub for innovation, research, and advanced maritime competencies. Government officials likewise affirmed that the facility is intended to complement—not compete with—the private sector by addressing industry gaps and expanding access to quality, future-ready training.
Through its participation in industry consultations and collaborative initiatives, PTC contributes valuable operational insights that help shape maritime education and training. These efforts support the development of future-ready Filipino seafarers equipped to thrive in a rapidly changing global shipping landscape.
