PTC-CSJ wraps up My Ship My World 2024

After four weeks of fruitful email exchanges among 120 Grade 6 teachers and 53 ship officers from 17 PTC Principals, My Ship My World (MSMW) 2024 was successfully completed in 41 public elementary schools in Malabon, Muntinlupa, and Quezon City. Together, these teachers reached more than 13,500 students who benefited from the program.

MSMW aimed to introduce shipping and its benefits to young students to hopefully encourage them to pursue a maritime career. Every week, the ship officers answered questions focused on basic concepts in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies and how they are applied to ships and shipping. They also shared glimpses of their lives and experiences on board. The teachers then integrated these into the weekly lesson plans and discussed them in their classes.

Through MSMW, the teachers appreciated very much the value of real-world applications of basic theoretical concepts and the impact of experiential learning on their students.

Some reflections/comments from teachers, ship officers, and students are noted below.

Math teacher’s reflections:
This week we discussed how percentages are used in the shipping industry—specifically for calculating profit margins, fuel efficiency, and cargo distribution.

The students were fascinated by how these operations depend on accurate percentage calculations. They realized that math is not just about solving textbook problems but is a critical tool in making real-world decisions. This understanding deepened their appreciation for Math.

Social Studies teacher’s reflections:
Integrating MSMW into my Social Studies curriculum provided a remarkable opportunity for students to connect historical concepts with the contemporary maritime industry. Through the valuable correspondence with my Captain, students gained first-hand insights into the challenges faced by the shipping sector, such as environmental concerns, the importance of technological adaptation, and the welfare of crew members.

Students were more engaged, not only in learning about history but in applying this understanding to real-world scenarios. I am reminded of the impact that experiential learning can have in the classroom.
